About the Dictionary

The dictionary has the following features:

  • Both simplified (简体字) and traditional characters (繁體字) are presented together.
  • Pronounciation is provided in both pinyin (拼音, used in mainland China) and zhuyin fuhao (注音符號, used in Taiwan and Hong Kong).
  • Searches can be performed using simplified characters, traditional characters, pinyin pronounciation, zhuyin pronounciation, or English.
  • You don't have to know anything about computer encodings for Chinese to use the dictionary! You don't have to know about BIG5, GB2312, or any other computer terms to use this dictionary!
  • The search algorithms have been carefully constructed. They are superior to the algorithms used in the original Perl script accompanying the original CEDICT data.
  • When searching based on pronounciation, you can omit some or all of the tone mark indicators, regardless of whether you use pinyin (拼音) or zhuyin fuhao (注音符號).
  • You can type pinyin tone marks using the numbers 1-4.
  • When entering pinyin, you can use “u:” to represent the “” (ü) vowel. For example: “” = “lu:4”,“” = “lu4”.
  • You can type zhuyin fuhao 注音符號 using your mouse and the table on the right side of the page. The table has tone mark indicators for you to use.
  • Examples and explanations in Chinese are being added to the dictionary.
  • Illustrations and images are being added to the dictionary.
  • In the future it will be possible for users to contribute new entries to the dictionary. Please register if you are interested in helping!
  • To use the dictionary to full advantage, you will need a Chinese font with both simplified (简体字) and traditional characters (繁體字) in it. A suitable high-quality, freely-available font that you can download is the Firefly New Song font. This font can be used on Linux, Macintosh, and Windows systems.
  • To use the dictionary to full advantage, you need a good modern browser that supports recent World Wide Consortium standards for CSS and DOM such as Firefox, Opera, Konqueror, or Safari.
  • Internet Explorer continues to fall behind in supporting key W3C CSS standards. This site might not look or work correctly in Internet Explorer. If you use Internet Explorer, you might be disappointed.

We welcome your suggestions for improvement!
